The legendary Costa Rica 95, part of the Catimor series, is considered one of the oldest native varieties, with a history dating back over 20 years. Throughout the years, Costa Rica 95 has been the only champion in COE competitions, and in 2011, it was the only variety to survive the attack of the “chicken eye disease” at the Ojo De Gallo farm. This coffee grows at an altitude of 1,800 meters. In the 2019 COE competition, it scored an impressive 92.28 points and was a washed coffee. The farm became the champion in the 2019 auction, fetching $44 per kilogram. Costa Rica 95 is known for its strong vitality and is often referred to as a “blessed seed.” It took first place in the 2019 COE competition.
In 1997, the farm discovered a new coffee variety called “LALÚCUMA,” but it initially didn’t attract much attention. However, in 2011, the entire plantation was hit by a disease commonly known as “Ojo de POLLO,” which destroyed all varieties except for LALÚCUMA. Since then, they began planting MARSHELL, which is now known as Costa Rica 95.
